Isophane[]
For some reason (isophane is also a meterological term, believe it or not), the term isophane was also applied to neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin, especially outside of North America. Protamine itself is the "fish stuff" & goes into insulins NPH/isophane and PZI to dealy their absorption. There's more "fish stuff" in PZI and therefore, it lasts longer than NPH/isophane. There's other medical uses for "straight" protamine minus insulin. When Hagedorn was tinkering, he apparently reduced the protamine content of the PZI, which was already on the market & this is probably how NPH was born. Did a thumbnail similar to this on isophane definition.
