Long-acting insulins were up until recently, of one type: They were natural or r-DNA/GE/GM insulins that used protamine PZI or zinc Ultralente as the suspension, which slowed absorption of the insulin. Lately there are new insulin analogs such as Lantus and Levemir, which are artificially produced by genetically-engineered microorganisms, which can last even longer due to various patented innovations.
Natural long-acting insulins are being quickly replaced by the analogs, in the human world. The options for cats and dogs are therefore reduced.
