Revision as of 14:45, 17 April 2006
Aztec was initially difficult to regulate, due in large part to his finicky eating habits. Food intake was very inconsistent in both type and amount, although this has gradually improved over the past year. He currently eats 3 tablespoons of Innova EVO dry per day, alongside 1 5.5oz can of low-carb wet food. He was a life-long free-feeder, which also complicated the regulation process, until we managed to work out a system where he eats MOST of his meal within the first 2-3 hours of his insulin shot. This has really helped extend the duration of Caninsulin and brought his preshots down from the mid 20s to mid teens. Did I mention that he's absolutely fabulous about home blood-glucose testing? Purrs the whole time.
Other issues in the past have been 2 DKA episodes; the first right when he was diagnosed in February 2003 (also required a PEG feeding tube for 3 months afterwards), and another one in November 2003 when he went on a hunger strike. He had severe neuropathy for many months in the summer of 2004, which has since completely cleared up. Aztec has never had a UTI or any other infection, and his teeth are still in fine shape. He's been getting 2.8u bid of Caninsulin since August 2005.
Switched to Levemir in April 2006.
